Comprehensive Overview to the Emerging Brain Fitness Field
|
| Review Date: October 30, 2009 |
| Reviewer: R. Sakhuja, Boston, MA |
This is the most comprehensive book I have seen on the emerging field of brain fitness. It explains how the brain works, what brain fitness is, who can benefit from brain fitness and evaluates some very specific programs that people can use to "exercise" their brains. Given our increasing lifespans, and desire to do mentally stimulating activities whether for leisure or pleasure at older ages, a book that underscores the importance of improving and maintaining our mental capabilities is very timely.
I particularly liked the balance in the book of explaining the science and background behind why brain fitness makes sense with the very practical evaluation of the tools that are available and the different brain functions that they improve. The book is also very accessible and understandable for a non-expert in brain science --- A very good overview of and introduction to the emerging brain fitness field.

If exercise for the body works why not the brain. Until recently nobody in the medical profession would think so. London shook the world with its new discoveries about the brain, that of London Taxi drivers. Their "KNOWLEDGE" was the basis of our knowledge on brain plasticity today. The "KNOWLEDGE" is a term officially used to describe the test the Taxi Drivers had to take to get the licence to drive Taxis in London. Two to three years of studying the various routes (often on a scooter) physically enlarged the hippocampal region.
Other studies showed similar changes to brains of musicians and medical students from memory work. Bilingualism helped too. The race is now on for some convenient and easy "brain gym" and this book "The Sharpbrains guide to Brain Fitness" will be an excellent introduction to anyone wanting some fairly neutral material on the matter.
The book is easy to read, and has a clear structure, although I found it difficult to look for specific references. Later I discovered that these are to be found on their website. There are details of cutting edge software for brain exercises and many interviews of leaders in the field.
There is much that one can do to slow down the brain deterioration in normal aging and who knows, one day Alzheimer as well.
Get the book now, you will not regret it. |
Great for educators and parents

As a parent and educator of Kindergarten age children, I found this book very useful and am using it as a professional development tool.
It is so nice to get solid professional opinions on ADHD for instance and how medication has been the easy solution and overdiagnosis the rule.
I am using this book to build a healthy learning environment for the kids I teach, incorporating yoga, mindfulness, physical activity, good diet habits and a very challenging learning curriculum to get those young brains to reach their full potential. Thanks for all the advice, myth busters and product reviews... I will keep on sharpening that brain of mine and the ones of my students!
